In 1987, I inherited a property in Alcona County, which is where I now live with my husband and two cats. Along with our children, we started spending as much time as we could here, planning to make this our permanent home one day. Fifteen years ago, when 3G technology finally reached Alcona County, we were able to make the move.
I am deeply committed to the ideals of democracy. I have been a member of the League of Women Voters since 1989 and have actively advocated for many issues I felt would benefit our society. I am a Democrat, and I am a Progressive.
In 2014, my husband and I started becoming involved in local politics, feeling not only the usual responsibility but that we could actually make a difference here. Since then, I have worked hard for candidates all down the ballot, as well as on several Initiatives and Proposals. Working for national, statewide, and regional candidates, it is clear to me that urban-based headquarters don't have a clue what rural voters need. I am very pleased to see the rise of the Rural Caucus of the Michigan Democratic Party and have hopes that the message we can bring will be heard. I am proud to help.
I volunteered in the last four elections for Legislative Representative for the Michigan House District 106. The hours and hours I spent knocking on doors and speaking to my neighbors in the 106th showed me who my fellow citizens are, and what concerns them. Number one, I believe is freedom. Not freedom to "do" but freedom "from". Freedom from having to choose between clean water and food on the table. Freedom from the crippling healthcare debt that 1.3 million Michigan adults carry. Freedom from the loss of dignity caused by poverty, especially in old age. And freedom from fear that we will lose the rights and freedoms so many have sacrificed so much to gain.
We Believe all people are created equal, that this is America's fundamental ideal.
We Believe that America is a democracy, by and for the people; ruled by the Constitution and its interpretations, protected by the Bill of Rights, and inspired by the Declaration of Independence.
We Believe these founding documents demand Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity for all Americans, in full and equal measure - regardless of who you are, what you believe, or where you live.
We Believe that the Duty of government is to strive endlessly to make the ideals of Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity a reality for all.
We Believe that the purpose of government is to protect our nation, defend our democracy, and to endlessly promote the welfare of each and every one of us.
We Believe that fighting for these ideals is our purpose as a political party.
